The Weekly Pull (2/20/13) – GREEN LANTERN: NEW GUARDIANS #17

Part three of “Wrath of the First Lantern” continues the feeding frenzy of the titular First Lantern. And in GREEN LANTERN: NEW GUARDIANS #17, he’s set his sights on Kyle Rayner. But will Volthoom find in the newly ascended White Lantern a kindred spirit? Or will Kyle be munched upon like all the rest?

Warning: Contains minor spoilers for Green Lantern #17. You have been warned.

Newly freed from Guardian control, the First Lantern Volthoom wants to rewrite all reality.

You know. As you do.

But to do that, this emotion vampire must feed on the turmoil and deep-seated insecurities of people. And he’s chosen the main characters of the various GL books as his meal tickets. In a part two of Wrath of the First Lantern, he gave Guy Gardner a run for his money. But now he’s moved on to Kyle Rayner, the one character in this series most in touch with all his emotions.

As with Guy Gardner, GREEN LANTERN: NEW GUARDIANS #17 presents us with an awesome two page spread of the tangled web of Kyle’s memories. It’s also got a rundown of all his previous incarnations, from infancy to early adulthood, from his rookie GL days, to his time as Ion, his possession by Parallax, and even to his brief attempt to harness all seven colored rings at once. It’s amazing, aided by the fact that on occasion Volthoom will manipulate the web of emotions with his bear hands, an effect incorporated into the panel divisions themselves. It’s used sparingly, but it reminds me of the amazing art of the current Swamp Thing ongoing.

Anything that reminds me of that series is at least doing something right.

I stated in another post that this event seems to be running with a format that focuses on one character each issue. Aside from the main Green Lantern series (I suspect, anyway), we seem to be moving episodically for the most part. So really, if you don’t want to buy all the books in this event, you don’t really need to do so. The two such issues I’ve read thus far – this issue and Green Lantern Corps #17 – don’t present any new details you need to know about Volthoom, so if you just don’t care about Kyle or Guy or Jon Stewart or Atrocitus, you can probably skip them.

Which is good, considering that every GL title is tied into this event. And event that’s going to extend into May. Pick your battles, people.

One last thing. It makes sense in context, but once again Kyle is presented in a light that could be construed as him being a favored character. Not only is he the only permanent White Lantern, he’s also the only one presented so far who can in any way resist the memory and/or reality warping powers of the First Lantern. Not well, obviously, or we wouldn’t have an event. But if you didn’t know any better, you’d almost say Kyle’s real name was Wesley. Even if only to a degree.

If only GL fans from the Rayner solo era could see how much slack he’s getting. Then again, they’d also be pitching a fit and standing aghast at the concept of multi-colored lantern corps.
